Two separate accidents claimed 20 lives in Northern Region Rafiq :

Police in the northern region have confirmed 20 persons have died from two separate road accident which occurred over the weekend.

Northern regional police PRO Assistant superintendent of police, ASP Yussif Tanko disclosed this to the media in Tamale Sunday morning.

The first accident which claimed two lives happened on Saturday on the Tamale – Bolga trunk road involving a motor king loaded with firewood and a cargo truck carrying lumber.

” Preliminary investigations has revealed the rope tiring the firewood got torn and the rider lost his balance and rode in to the lane of the heavily loaded truck “. ASP Tanko said.

One accident body was torn beyond recognition and the pieces could not be picked to the morgue and a medical officer performed the autopsy on the spot.

The other victim who was transported to Tamale teaching hospital in an ambulance also died later. ASP Tanko added.

At about 01:42am Sunday, another accident occurred Yapei – Yipela on the Tamale- Buipe highway which claimed 16 lives including both drivers.

Police say a Neoplan bus with registration number GW 2659 T carrying about 70 passengers traveling from Nalerigu to Ejura crushed with an oncoming bus with registration number GM 5383-12

” Several injured persons were rushed to the Tamale teaching hospital for treatment.

The16 dead bodies including both drivers were also conveyed to the Tamale teaching hospital Mortuary for preservation.


The suspect driver name not yet known was in charge of the neoplan bus. On reaching a section of the road at Yapei- Yipala in a curve attended to overtake a cargo car ahead of him in the process the vehicle crushed with an incoming bus”. ASP Tanko added.

Meanwhile,  a mob besieged the Tamale-Buipe Highway at Yapei-Yipala and blocked the road preventing vehicles from passing. Personnel comprising Policemen from Buipe, RDF Tamale and military detachment stationed at Buipe led by DSP Kwame Nimo the Buipe district commander have been deployed to restore order and calm has been restored allowing traffic to flow.
