The leadership of the opposition National Democratic Congress, NDC in the Northern region are calling on Hon. Salifu Sa-eed to resign as the Regional Minister.
This comes in a wake of the burning of properties by security forces in the region worth thousands of Ghana cedis.
A contingent of armed military set ablaze fourteen (14) Tipper trucks, excavator, four(4) motorbikes and a dredging engine used for sand winning activities at Afa Yili in the kumbungu district of the North last Saturday.
The military were also accused by the tipper truck drivers of extortion and brutality.
The Northern Regional Executive Committee of the NDC described the situation as unacceptable the bizarre manner those properties belonging to various tipper unions in Tamale were destroyed.
The NDC in the region also accused the northern regional minister of being behind the raid despite denying knowledge of the directive.
At a press conference held mid Monday morning, regional secretary of the NDC Lawyer Halid Abdul Rauf says
” our painful investigation regarding this dastardly act revealed that the burning of these properties occurred at a distance of about 2km away from the installations of Ghana water company, the location of which according to the tipper drivers was designated by Northern region REGSEC somewhere in December last year on a fact finding mission “.
He however stressed that the NDC as a party will not condone any form of lawlessness.
Lawyer Rauf further said the Regional Minister in consonant with operation vanguard would have done themselves a great service and the owners of the tipper trucks if they had addressed themselves with sections 99(5) and 96(2)(3)(4) of the mining act 900 which provides for how rather this unfortunate situation could have been handled.
He again said the Regional Minister is a clear manifestation of the NPP mantra of vigilantism which is gradually creeping in to the officialdom.
According to lawyer Rauf, Hon Salifu Sa-eed as chairman of REGSEC is better positioned to know the volatile nature of the security situation in the region and shouldn’t have given such reckless directive to the security forces which eventually took away the economic livelihood of innocent owners of Tipper trucks.
Lawyer Rauf also alleged the act by the military is a ploy by the NPP to divert attention of people in the region from a number of issues including:
The harsh economic realities, yet to see the one village one dam promises, one factory one district, 275 thousand Dollars promised districts, the killer electricity tariffs, galloping fuel hikes, the escalating hajj fees, the unbearably erratic power supply in the region and complete breakdown of security in the region.
Meanwhile, the NDC advised the affected victims to use due processes in seeking redress from the law court and are therefore calling for an independent investigation in to the act.
Meanwhile REGSEC disclosed the military command will issue a statement on the raid soon.
