New rice variety to be cultivated in the north



The Northern Regional Minister has called on rice farmers in the region to take advantage of newly introduce rice variety to increase the yields and expand their production.

The new variety of rice was introduced by the Jiangxi Academy of Agricultural Science from China to help farmers to improve their yields with quality grain rice.

Hon Salifu Saeed said, the northern region has the best of land and good soil nutrients for the new variety of rice, adding that, the new variety rice will augment government effort in providing quality grains to improve farmers’ yields.

The Northern Minister made this call when a delegation from the Jiangxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences paid a courtesy call on him. Jiangxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences is an investment group working in the area of agriculture.

Mr. Saeed assured the delegation of government committed and support to introduce the new rice variety and its cultivation in the Northern Region for export.

He said government was also ready to provide the Jiangxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences from China the necessary requirement such as land, and water bodies to help in the effective conduct of the new rice variety in the region.

A memorandum of understanding was signed between the Ghana and China improved the agricultural sector of the country last year. The agreement was also to further strengthen the relationship between the two countries.

The Northern Regional Minister therefore emphasized the importance of that bilateral relationship and assured the Chinese investment group the government commitment.

He said the government was willing to strengthen the relationship between China and Ghana which would help in value addition to the country’s products especially rice.

The Director of Jiangxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences from China, Yanbo Ma, said the cultivation of the new rice variety could also be used to produce both alcohol and non-alcohol beverages.

Again, the new rice variety could also be used to produce cooking oil for consumers in the country and for export.
