The Mion District of the Northern Region this morning joined the rest of the country to celebrate this year’s 33rd Farmers Day at Zakpalsi in the Mion district.
The National Farmers Day is a programme marked each year to honour gallant Farmers and Fishermen in Ghana.
Speaking on the theme, “Farming for Food and Jobs”, the DCE for Moon, Hon. Mohammed Hashim Abdallah, underscored government’s vision to modernise and transform agriculture in order to expand the opportunities for job creation.
He said the government and his office will provide the necessary support to farmers in the district to ensure that government programmes such as planting for food and jobs are successful.
Hon Hashim Abdallah revealed that, the district distributed 13,550 bags of NPK fertilizer, 1,420 bags of urea fertilizer, 1,846 bags of Yara legume and 480 bags of ammonia fertilizer to farmers through the planting for food and jobs program.
He urged the beneficiary farmers to pay the remaining balance to enable the district request for more fertilizer next year.
The Mion DCE used the occasion to appeal to the Chiefs, Assembly members and opinion leaders to report all illegal chain saw operators at their various areas to the assembly.
Mr. Sulemana Sayibu of Kusheli was adjudged the overall Mion District best farmer. Chief Npoan of Jegrido in the Nakokpagli electoral area and Mr. Sulemana Alhassan of Suri in the Jimle electoral area were adjudged the 1st and 2nd runners up respectively.
Consolation prizes were given to other deserving farmers.
The DCE congratulated all Farmers for their immense contribution to the growth of the country’s economy.
