The President, His Excellency Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo announced last Saturday that the Ghana National Petroleum Cooperation (GNPC) is undertaking seismic works in the Voltarian Basin to exploits onshore oil.
According to the President, the seismic work and project undertaken by the GNPC is to unearth the hydrocarbon potentials of the basin as well as open the region up for massive investment in the petroleum sector, adding that, the GNPC last year signed an agreement with the world’s biggest land seismic acquisition company and the Petroleum System in Hydrocarbon Botanical Survey to make this exercise a reality.
President Nana Addo who was speaking at the Nayiri Palace in Nalerigu hinted that, areas to affected by the project in the Northern Region includes, Savelugu, Nanton, Yunyoo, West Mamprusi, Tolon, Central Gonja and Mion District.
Mr. Akufo-Addo disclosed that, the project is going to be done in four phases; 2D seismic acquisition, processing, interpretation and drilling of wells.
His Excellency Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo urged traditional leaders and citizenry of Mamprugu to support and cooperate with the seismic activities when they commence work.
“It’s disturbing and I know it will disturb some people in some communities. With the seismic exploration they may even go through some farms but I am empowering you and all the citizenry of Mamprugu to cooperate with these seismic activities. They are not meant to disturb you, they are meant to help all of us at the end so when they come and they are doing their work support them, allow them to do their work, at the end of the day you are going to be the principal beneficiaries”.
