Zabzugu NDC celebrates MP’s victory

Members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Zabzugu Constituency have been celebrating the victory of the Member of Parliament in the area in Court.

The Zabzugu MP, Hon Umar Alhassan was dragged to court for dual citizenship after winning the 2016 parliamentary elections.

Hon Umar beat the incumbent, Hon  John Jabaa Bennam of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) with a little of 157 votes. Hon Umar got 13,591(50.29%) while the incumbent John Jabaa Bennam got 13,434 (49.71%) in the elections.

Hon Alhassan Umar is said to have an American citizenship after relocating to that country in 1993 and has not denounced his American citizenship before contesting the elections.

An Accra based high court on Tuesday dismissed the case about the dual citizenship claim on the Zabzugu Member of Parliament.

The plaintiffs in the case – Nikimola Jacob Makinye and Moponyaw Godwin – wanted the court to remove Alhaji Alhassan Umar from Parliament and declare the seat vacant.
They were seeking a declaration that “the defendant, who owes allegiance to a country other than Ghana, is disqualified from holding the office of Member of Parliament of Zabzugu in Ghana.

They insist that Alhassan Umar committed perjury since he knew very well that he was not qualified to contest for the office of MP but went ahead to do so.

Expressing their excitement to, the leadership of the NDC in the Zabzugu Constituency described the outcome of the court decision as victory for democracy.

They hinted that, the NDC party in the constituency were sure of victory because the plaintiffs did not have a good since day one of the court proceedings.

Speaking in an interview immediately after the verdict, Hon Alhassan Umar expressed his joy in the verdict saying, the victory is a victory against ethnicity, tribalism and divisive leadership.

“ This victory means that the people of Zabzugu are one regardless of our gender, tribe or social status hence would not allow anyone to put us asunder”
He explained.

The Zabzugu Legislator said the people of the Zabzugu constituency have gained their freedom from the hands of divisive leadership and believes that Zabzugu would see massive development in peace and unity.

“ No more tribalism in the Zabzugu constituency, we have gained our freedom on this day from retrogressive way of living all because of bad leadership. We shall forever live in peace and unity which will bring us the development we are looking for in our dearest Zabzugu constituency.

Hon Umar thanked all well wishers especially those in the Zabzugu constituency for their support through prayers and assured them of his readiness to listen and attend to their needs regardless of their political affiliation, gender or tribe.
