Teachers threaten nationwide strike over unpaid arrears

Teachers across the country have threatened to lay down their tools if government does not pay them their outstanding arrears by February 29, 2015.

They have accused government of breaching an agreement to pay their outstanding salary arrears, car maintenance allowances and transfer grants by June 13, 2015.

In an interview on Joy FM Monday morning, the President of NAGRAT, Christian Adai-Poku said the leadership have been compelled to make the move due to the persistent harassment from its membership.

He said, “When we had the agreement they went to sleep. Our teachers are pestering us everywhere. Some are even insulting us. I mean a lot of things are happening and it’s not palatable. It’s as if government wants us to set us against our members and that is not fair.”

Mr Adai-Poku noted that they have served the National Labour Commission notice of the intended strike if their arrears are not paid them by the end of the month.

“…We have notified them of our intention to embark on a strike action if these things are not done by the end of this month,” he added.
