The Savelugu Municipal Assembly has presented provisions to the Deaf and Dumb of the Savelugu School for the Deaf.
About thirty seven (37) of them who falls under the Savelugu Municipality each received a tin of Milo, 1 cube sugar box, a bow of gari, toothpaste, brush, 3 geisha soup and 3 bars of key soups.
The donation which done under the social welfare department of the Assembly is part of the disability share of the District Assembly Common Fund (DACF).
Presenting the items, the Municipal Chief Executive for Savelugu, Hon Hajia Ayishetu Seidu hinted that, the needs of the School for the Deaf has been prioritize by the Assembly to ensure that students are specially taken care of.
She said, the Assembly has provided some infrastructure development to the school, saying that, the Assembly has built a block-wall around the school to make students and staff safe.
Hon Ayishetu noted that, through the efforts of the Assembly, the Ghana Ports and Habour Authourity has provided the school with a three huge polytank and accessories to curtail the water crisis in the school.
“We will do whatever it’s necessary to ensure that students remain in school and learn hard to become better citizens to contribute their quota towards national development”.
The Headmistress of the Savelugu School for the Deaf, Madam Gertrude Ansah thanked the Assembly for the kind gesture and urged the Assembly to do more to support the school.
Madam Gertrude said, the donation will go a long a way to help the students stay in school.
Parents of the Deaf students also expresses their gratitude to the government, saying that, the donations will not only make their wards happy but will boost the morale to stay in school and learn.
The 1992 Republic Constitution of Ghana provides for the establishment of the DACF and mandates Parliament to annually make provision of not less than five percent of the total revenues of Ghana of the District Assemblies for Development, out of which three percent of the DACF are to be allocated to the PWDS.
The aimed of the District Assembly Common Fund (DACF) for PWDs is to minimize poverty among all PWDs, particularly those outside the formal sector of employment and also to ensure the enhancement of their image through labour.
It is also to support the income-generating activities of individual as a means of their economic empowerment and to provide educational support for children, students and trainees with disabilities.
The Savelugu Municipal Assembly have so far supported over 100 People With Disabilities (PWDs) with income generating tools and items.
