The District Chief Executive for Sagnarigu, Hon Iddrisu Mariam has announced that the assembly in collaboration Zoomlion will fumigate all Senior High Schools in the district enable students live safe in their dormitories.
The Senior High Schools to be fumigated includes Kalpohin Senior High, Northern School Business High, Business High and Tamale Senior High Schools.
According to her, there are reports of blood sucking insects called bed bugs that have invaded the schools, adding that, all the dormitories of the school have been infected by the bed bugs.
Bed bugs are parasitic insects of the cimicid family that feed exclusively on blood.
The name bed bug derives from the preferred habitat of Cimex lectularius; warm houses and especially near or insides beds and bedding or other sleep areas. Bed bugs are mainly active at night, but are not exclusively nocturnal. They usually feed on their hosts without being noticed.
A number of adverse health effects may result from bed bug bites, including skin rashes, psychological effects and allergic symptoms.
Hon Mariam said, the effects of the bed bug bites can affect teaching and learning in the schools thus the need to spray the schools to kill the bed bugs and other insects harboring in the dormitories.
The Sagnarigu DCE hinted that, the fumigating exercise will be done periodically to ensure that bed bugs and other insects don’t gets infestation in the schools.
Hon Mariam said, “I have instructed my coordinator to link up with the manager of Zoomlion to set a team for the commencement of the spraying exercise, ” she added.
Meanwhile, headmasters of the various schools in the district welcomed the Sagnarigu DCE initiative and urged her to continue her laudable initiatives in the education sector.
The headmaster Kalpohin Senior High School, Togulana Mahama said, the school has been battling with the issue of bed bugs for so many years now but he however optimistic that with the initiative of the assembly, the problems of bed bugs will be a thing of the past.
