Sagnarigu District forms epidemic taskforce team over Meningitis threat Hamza Lansah Lolly:
The Sagnarigu District Assembly has formed an epidemic prepareness taskforce team to prevent any potential meningits outbreak in the district.
The Assembly at an emergency meeting on Thursday have put measures in place to educate people in the area the causes and symptoms of meningitis.
These follows the recent meningitis outbreak in some senior high schools across the country, including Damong SHS, Bawku SHS, Koforidua Technical School, Tempane SHS and Jaman North.
Ninety four (94) cases and 12 deaths has been recorded so far.
The meeting which brought together the district health directorate and some officials of the assembly was to have a first hand information about the meningitis and a possible preventative methods in a case of an outbreak.
In an interview with the DCE for Sagnarigu, Hon Iddrisu Mariam said, the district epidemic prepareness team will be mandated to carry out health education exercise in all the schools in the district.
“District epidemic preparedness team is tasked to visit the dormitories and dining halls of all secondary schools in the district to ensure that there is proper ventilation.” She said
“Basically, the district epidemic preparedness team is mandated to meet on a quarterly basis or during an outbreak or whenever there is a threat of an outbreak. And currently we have an outbreak following stories from other places.”
The Sagnarigu DCE said, the taskforce among other things discussed and also adopt strategies that “we can put in place to ensure that the district is not hard hit by the meningitis outbreak.”
“We agreed that there was the need to carry out health education in all the secondary schools within the district. And then again we also saw that there is the need to alert all hospitals within the district to be in readiness for early treatment so that even if we get an outbreak or a case we will not record deaths. ”
Hon Mariam reiterated that, “As the District Chief Executive I think that the lives of the people are my responsibility
so if we can avoid or prevent deaths from early treatment it becomes necessary to alert all hospitals to be in readiness.”
She said, “We also saw the need to alert members of the surveillance team to look out for certain signs and symptoms in their catchment areas.”
The Sagnarigu DCE revealed that, as part of measures to prevent the spread of outbreaks and provide quality health care to students will to establish sick bays in all second cycle institutions in the district.
Hon Mariam assured the people in the district especially students and school authorities of the Assembly’s prepareness to deal with any outbreak.
“Though we are not praying for any outbreak but however we are ready to deal with any situation. We are taking preventives methods seriously”. She emphasized

She said, symptoms the taskforce will be looking for includes fever, dryness of the throat,sore throat, vomiting and other signals.
