The Northern Regional Executive Committee for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has accused the Nana led NPP administration of being insensitive and worsening the plight of many who suffered from the spillage of the Bagre Dam.
In a press conference held today in Tamale by the Committee, they stated that the NPP’s great insensitivity was proved beyond measure just 2 days ago when the Vice President of the state, H.E Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia came to the Northern Region but made no effort to pay a visit to any of the affected areas nor spare a word to assuage the pains and sufferings faced by the victims.
They stressed that barely 2 years ago, the current vice president and his flag bearer would have rushed to funerals of fowls and flooding of gutters with simulated sympathy just to win votes.
”The insensitivity of the Nana Addo-Osafo Marfo-Bawumia led government reached legendary heights when in the mist of massive disaster, Dr Bawumia was in the region just 2 days ago and couldn’t even pay a visit to districts where this disaster occurred. He couldn’t be bothered either to even spare a word to assuage the pains and sufferings of these farmers and families who lost their members. Ironically this is the region and districts he claim to be his home. Sad isn’t it? Barely two years ago, this same man and his flag bearer would have rushed to funerals of fowls and flooding of gutters with simulated sympathy just for votes. Thank God the Ghanaian is seeing their true and natural behaviors”. They said
They added “Equally disappointing is the sloppy communication strategy adopted to warn the inhabitants in and around the flood points of the looming dangers ahead leading to this loss of lives and property running into millions of Ghana Cedis. As usual they claim to have conducted public education, siphoned public funds but never educated those whose lives would be affected”
The Executive Committee added that considering the intensity of destruction by the floods, authorities were expected to as a matter of urgency come to victims’ aid with support that truly relieves the affected victims of their suffering and loss. They lamented however, that instead of taking such steps the government is rather worsening the plight of victims by delaying the response in providing relief items.
They explained that the government practically doing nothing on the ground justifies that the Nana Addo led administration is highly insensitive towards the plight of the victims.
“Considering the intensity of the destruction caused by the floods, the authorities were expected to as a matter of urgency come to their aid with support that truly relieves the affected victims of their suffering and loss. They are however worsening their plight with their delayed response in providing relief items. The palliative care rhetoric’s they are currently engaged in while practically doing nothing on the ground rather justifies the insensitivity of the Nana Addo-Osafo Marfo-Bawumia led government” They said.
The committee has advised that government and the Northern Development Authority revisit the Mahama administration plan of building a hydro and modern irrigation dam at Pwalugu to not only contain excess water from a spillage as such, but also improve the economy of the North.
“We also call on the government and the Northern Development Authority, who for almost 2 years have done practically nothing to quickly revisit the Mahama administration plan of building a hydro cum modern irrigation dam at Pwalugu to not only contain excess water from such spillage but also improve the economy of the North. This project was at an advanced stage when the NDC left office in 2016. They should not as usual abandon such a visionary project initiated by the transformational and visionary leader, John Dramani Mahama”
The NDC Northern Regional Executive Committee however expressed sympathy to victims of the Bagre Dam’s spillage.
