The Mion District Assembly in the Northern Region have diverted an amount of GHS34, 100 diverted from the Disability Fund of the assembly within a week.
According to the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), the Mion District Assembly, in 2015, diverted the disability portion of the District Assemblies Common Fund to do other things to the detriment of PWDs in the area.
The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament thus ordered the Mion District Chief Executive, Alhaji Mohammed Hashim Abdallah and the Assembly’s Finance Officer one week to refund the GHS34, 100 Disability money. The Committee also ordered the Mion District Co-ordinating Director (DCD) and District Finance Officer (DFO) to refund GH¢84,000 for spending such money without any supporting documents. The Chairman of PAC, Mr James Klutsey Avedzi in a PAC sittings in Tamale, Thursday, reiterated “I wish to state and clearly, no assembly has the right to use the disability funds for other things rather than its intended purpose”. “We are giving you one week to go and do the refund and let the auditors come to verify that to ensure that you have actually given the disability fund to the disability account,” He added
The DCE for Mion, Mohammed Hashim Abdallah, in his defense hinted the money was borrowed to do other activities but failed to disclose to the committee what the diverted disability money was used for. The Mion DCE claimed some amount of the money has been paid with an outstanding debt of GHS27, 600 but the auditors rebutted the DCE claims, stating categorically that, there is no document to prove the repayment claimed.
