The Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU) is calling for the removal of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), Dr Stephen K. Opuni from office.
The workers, clad in red garments and wielding placards gathered, at the Labour Ministry, Thursday to present a petition to the Employment and Labour Relations Minister, Haruna Iddrisu.
Some of the messages on the placards read: “Corruption at COCOBOD”, “Dr Opuni stop destroying COCOBOD”, “Sharp decline of cocoa industry under Dr Opuni’s tenure.”
In a petition they presented to Deputy Employment and Labour Relations Minister, Baba Jamal, the workers accused Dr Opuni of mismanagement.
They said the CEO has refused to honour the invitation of the Employment and Labour Minister on three occasions.
They alleged among others that some workers who refused to join an in-house union at COCOBOD and openly criticised the CEO have been “unfairly transferred”.
The Deputy Employment and Labour Relations Minister, Baba Jamal received the petition on behalf of the Minister. Mr. Jamal ensured the aggrieved workers that their concerns will be addressed.
