The Northern Region Chapter of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has strongly condemned an attack on UTV crew by some students of the University for Development Studies (UDS) led by the SRC President, Sadiq Kilwa.
The UTV crew who were on assignment at the University campus were verbally assaulted and their motorbike vandalized.
According to a statement issued and signed by the President of GJA-Northern Region Chapter, Mr. Caesar Abagali, the association is shocked about acts of indiscipline exhibited by some students of the Nyankpala campus who breached the law and attacked and manhandled a UTV Northern Regional correspondent under the instructions of the SRC president.
The GJA-Northern Region Chapter describes the attack as primitive, barbaric, callous and backward, and blatant attack on press freedom.
The association urged the police to immediately arrest the SRC President and thoroughly investigate the matter.

*GJA condemns attack on journalist*
The Northern Region chapter of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) is shocked about acts of indiscipline exhibited by some students of the UDS Nyankpala campus who breached the law and attacked and manhandled a UTV Northern Regional correspondent and his camera man under the instructions of the SRC president.
The students attacked and damaged the reporter’s motorbike whiles he was there to cover the school’s 26th Matriculation ceremony on grounds that UTV reported negatively on its intended alleged ‘Sex party’, which university authorities had cancelled.
The GJA sees the attack as primitive, barbaric, callous and backward, and blatant attack on press freedom.
This must not be encouraged and the GJA condemns the act.
We are even more surprised that students who are in school to learn and whose parents are toiling to pay fees are rather concerned about organising sex parties other than exploring employable and business opportunities.
UDS is a credible institution, which it had carved for itself and authorities must not sit idle and allow few indiscipline students to drag the institution’s name in the mud.
The GJA respects UDS and cherish the working relationship that had been forged over a long period.
We are therefore calling on the UDS authorities to institute immediate sanctions acceptable to GJA including replacing damaged equipment as well as offering an unqualified apology to the reporter, UTV and the GJA.
We are also calling on the police to immediately arrest the Nyankpala campus SRC president and thoroughly investigate the matter.
We are giving the UDS authorities seven days to swiftly respond to our demands so as not to mar the long working relationship between it and the media.
