The Regent of Dagbong, Traditional Kingdom Kampakuya Naa Abdulai Yakubu Andani has urged government to as matter compensate owners of Tipper trucks and other equipments burnt by the military in Afa Yili in the kumbungu District.
A contingent of armed military personnel torched an excavator, fourteen (14) Tipper trucks, four (4) motorbikes and a dredging engine used for sand winning activities at Afa Yili, Saturday.
In a press release issued by the Gbewa palace Tuesday March 6, 2018, the Dagbong Regent says he appreciates government efforts against Galamsey and other illegal mining activities but burning of the equipments by the military wasn’t the best either.
” it is important to state that I fully support His Excellency the presidents policy to end Galamsey and other illegal mining activities in Ghana but do not find the burning of expensive equipment to be in the best interest of our motherland “. Kampakuya Naa Abdulai said.
He further states authorities could have handled the situation in a much better way than the preferred violent option which imposes grave economic hardship to several families since the equipment and machinery have been a source of livelihood for many.
Kampakuya Naa wants a full scale investigation in to matter by HE the president of the republic and the military high command.
He further revealed, the inhabitants of the village and the divisional chief of the affected area are traumatized as a result of the military brutality.
The acting King of Dagbong is however calling on the tipper truck owners and drivers to remain calm in the hope that authorities will act swiftly to resolve the matter.
The statement by the Dagbong overlord comes just a day after the minority caucus of the North in Parliament are calling on the Defense Minister to resign from his post.
The NDC in the Northern region are also calling on the Regional Minister to resign for issuing such directive to the military.
They accused the Minister of orchestrating the raid.
Hon.Salifu Sa-eed has since denied knowledge of such directive.
According to the Minister, the act was under the command of operation vanguard who are an independent group tasked to ensure that Galamsey and other illegal mining activities by individuals or group Of persons do not go a long way to pollute and destroy our water bodies.
Hon. Salifu Sa-eed disclosed operation vanguard take their decision without recourse to permission from Disec or Regsec.
Meanwhile, the military high command are expected to issue a statement on the matter soon.
