Commission of inquiry on creation of new regions finalizes in-camera hearings

The Minister for Regional Re-organization and Development, Mr Dan Botwe, has indicated that government would not spend a pesewa of tax payer’s money in campaigning for the creation of any new region.

Mr Botwe said it was not the duty or mandate of government to do so and that government could help facilitate the process to make a constitutional requirement possible for its citizenry.

The Minister was speaking during an interview at the Castle, Osu, in Accra, yesterday during the last in-camera hearing which featured the chiefs and opinion leaders from the Mamprugu Traditional Area of the Northern Region.

He explained that it was the duty of the petitioners to provide infomercials such as brochures and other important documents to argue out their cases, campaign and justify the reasons for their request for a new region and lobby their own people to support them achieve their aim.

He said the Information Services Department (ISD) and the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) were engaged to explain the process to the people and help in creating awareness and understanding on the issues and not to launch any form of campaign in support of any of the petitioners.

Mr Botwe lauded the media for their performance and endurance during the two-week hearing saying “You have conducted yourself well even in the worst of circumstances and I have watched with keen interest your reports and commitment to work which is very commendable.”

The Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Hajia Alima Mahama,  in an interview, expressed concern about  the influx of the youth, especially head porters (kayayei), to the south, adding that there was the need to create better opportunities for the youth in the Region in order to get the phenomenon drastically  reduced if not eliminated.

She noted that the land size of the Northern Region was vast; hence partitioning it into three was appropriate to help in the speedy development of the Region and its people.

The Chairman of the Commission, Justice S. A. Brobbey, announced that the regional hearings would start on December 11, 2017 and that the dates for the other regional hearing would be communicated later.
