Amidu’s choice a good start – Bentil

Private legal practitioner, Kofi Bentil, has lauded President Akufo-Addo for his choice of former Attorney-General, Martin Amidu as Special Prosecutor.

Kofi Bentil told Joy FM Thursday afternoon shortly after the President announced the appointment of Mr. Amidu at the Flagstaff House, said Mr. Amidu’s credibility as far as the position is concerned, is unquestionable.

President Akufo-Addo told the gathering that he could also, personally, vouch for the public spiritedness of Mr. Amidu.

“We were on opposite sides in a series of landmark constitutional cases in the period leading up to and in the early years of the 4thRepublic, well known to students of constitutional law, which helped shape the evolution of the Constitution of the 4th Republic. As Deputy Attorney General, as he then was, he conducted those cases with the fairness which should be a cardinal feature of the conduct of any self-respecting lawyer,” he said.

Speaking to Evans Mensah, Kofi Bentil doubts “…if anybody is going to question the credentials of Martin Amidu.”

He, however, believes a lot more needs to be done to resource the Office of the Special Prosecutor to make it fully functional.

“It’s a good choice; it’s a good start but this is by no means the end,” he noted.

When he officially takes office as Ghana’s first independent prosecutor, Mr. Amidu, a former running mate of Prof. John Atta Mills in the 2000 elections, will be tasked with the responsibility of prosecuting past and present public officers deemed to have been corrupt.

Some critics are however, of the view that the setting up of the office of Special Prosecutor is only a drop in an ocean in the fight against corruption as the canker requires that we fire on all cylinders in dealing with the phenomenon.
