Deafness Disability is Not a Mental Disability
Abdul Hanan lost his hearing in 2004, at the age of 16, following several months of excruciating body pain. He was taken to the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) for treatment and the doctor told his dad to use palm kernel oil (Aleegi), by pouring it into his ears everyday from morning to evening. His father did this but it failed to work, even looking into traditional herbal treatment but that, too, didn’t work. His father then just said it must have been God’s ( Allah’s) will.
His family wanted him to drop out of school to become the family cowboy (nagkpara) which he refused to accept. He was flogged mercilessly by his elder brothers (except for my biological brother) every morning, to herd their animals (mogini).
Abdul Hanan completed Senior school in 2013 and now working with an international company that is into selling of motorbikes and spare parts.
Speaking with Abdul Hanan, he disclosed that he wants to further his education and he is seeking the help of philanthropists and other benevolent organisations to help further his education to become a teacher so that he can help his quota into the development of his community and the nation at large.
Abdul Hanan want everyone in this world to know that being hearing impaired is not a mental disability and, even if it were, it should not make them any less human. “We should be able to decide what we want to make out of our future”, says Abdul Hanan.
Abdul Hanan also serve as the of deaf people association in the Kumbungu district.
