The youngest Afro-pop duo singers in the Ghanaian music industry, Ibtihaj and Nihad known as 2S (2 Sisters) have been honored with awareness ambassadorship to campaign against Child Marriage in Ghana.
The Tamale Mayor, Hon Musah Iddrsiu Superior who conferred the two young stars with the Child Marriage ambassadorship at his office, Wednesday, said, the 2 Sister (2S) are role models in the society thus the need to use their music and fame to fight against child marriage in the Tamale Metropolis and Ghana at large.
He said, the metro assembly will support the youngest duo on their campaigns to ensure that the government wins against child marriage.
The rate of Child Marriage in Northern Region is quite alarming with gloaming statistics of 24%.
In Ghana, 1 in 4 women (27%) married before the age of 18 (MICS, 2011). Child Marriage has increased nationwide from 25.9% in 2006 to 27% in 2011. The Upper East region has the highest child marriage rate (39.2%), followed by Western region (36.7) and Upper West region (36.3%). Between 2006 and 2011, the following regions have seen considerable increase in prevalence: Easter Region (+ 6.6%), Central Region (+8.3%) and Western Region (+ 9.3%).
Speaking to Savannanews24, the Manager of the duo, Mr. Mohammed Hardi said, the 2S are working very hard through their music to educate the masses on various social issues, including, Girl Child Education, Female Mutilation, Drug Abuse and among other social vices that thwart social cohesion and development.
He hinted that, the group will soon come out with a Child Marriage campaign song to educate the public on the dangers of Child Marriage.
He therefore on behalf of 2S thanked the Tamale Mayor, Hon Musah Iddrisu Superior for the recognition.
